Double bubbles minimize

چکیده

The classical isoperimetric inequality in R3 states that the surface of smallest area enclosing a given volume is a sphere. We show that the least area surface enclosing two equal volumes is a double bubble, a surface made of two pieces of round spheres separated by a flat disk, meeting along a single circle at an angle of 120.

Heat transfer enhancement due to air bubble injection into a horizontal double pipe heat exchanger

If an air flow is injected into a liquid fluid, many ambulant air bubbles are formed inside the fluid. Air bubbles move inside the liquid fluid because of the buoyancy force, and the mobility of these air bubbles makes sizable commixture and turbulence inside the fluid. This mechanism was employed to enhance the heat transfer rate of a horizontal double pipe heat exchanger in this paper. Howeve...

Domain Walls and Double Bubbles

We study configurations of intersecting domain walls in a Wess-Zumino model with three vacua. We introduce a volume-preserving flow and show that its static solutions are configurations of intersecting domain walls that form double bubbles, that is, minimal area surfaces which enclose and separate two prescribed volumes. To illustrate this field theory approach to double bubbles, we use domain ...

Self-assembled vesicles were experimentally observed to form a variety of shapes [1]. However most equilibrium vesicles are spherical. This is not surprising, because spheres are known to minimize not only the surface energy but also the elastic energy of vesicles [2]. In mathematics it has been proven that spheres have the least area to enclose and separate a given volume. The analogous proble...

Asymmetric and symmetric double bubbles in an inhibitory ternary system

An inhibitory ternary system contains two terms in its free energy: the interface energy that favors micro-domain growth and the longer ranging confinement energy that prevents unlimited spreading. In a parameter regime where two constituents are small in size compared to the third constituent and the longer ranging energy does not dominate, there is a double bubble like stable critical point o...
